Nonprofit Board Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
NYC Service and the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York (NPCC) have partnered to release What Lies Beneath: The State of NYC Nonprofit Board Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, a first of its kind report identifying current board demographics and board diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) gaps, strategies, recommendations and resources for NYC’s nonprofit sector.
We found that NYC nonprofit board demographics do not reflect the diversity of NYC, and while nonprofits are interested in addressing DEI, there is often either inaction or ineffective action on the part of nonprofit leadership in addressing these concerns.
The report is based on a six-month study completed with the support of the NYC Nonprofit Board Development Coalition (the Coalition), led by NYC Service, which consists of 19 capacity-building organizations that support nonprofits across NYC. The report’s findings are a culmination of 420 online survey respondents and 37 focus group participants, representing nonprofit Chief Executive Officers/Executive Directors (CEOs/EDs) and board members throughout the five boroughs of NYC.
NYC Service and NPCC are jointly committed to supporting nonprofit board DEI efforts, and in partnership with the Coalition, will be creating a DEI Action Plan for NYC’s nonprofits over the coming months.

Based on this report, NYC Service developed "A Strategic Approach to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) for NYC Nonprofit Boards," a free introductory training series for nonprofit executives to move away from a surface-level understanding of DEIA to focus on building a deepened and common framework that works to harness board support and action.
