Opportunity Details

The Suitcase Project

As a result of the planned closing of the jail on Rikers Island, and bail reforms enacted at the New York City and State levels and the Covid-19 pandemic, thousands of people are being released from confinement. While these steps are positive, those being released do not have the resources needed to successfully reintegrate into society. This is the right time to radically change reentry to meet the growing and urgent need to ensure that the individuals leaving confinement receive the support they need to succeed. People leave prisons and jails mentally, physically and emotionally less healthy than they went in. They are released into society lacking needed resources in the areas of housing, employment, trauma-informed care and community support.
