Organization Profile

The Hart Island Project, Inc.

The mission of the Hart Island Project is to provide visibility and access to New York City’s public cemetery on Hart Island, Bronx, NY, where over one people have been buried since. The organization advocated for the end of penal control of Hart Island and transferring jurisdiction to NYC Parks in 2019. We seek an end to mass burials in New York City and preserve City Cemetery as the nation's largest Green Cemetery as wel as the only affordable green burial option in NYC. We offer free access to a database of burials and storytelling platform called Traveling Cloud Museum and recently added navigation tools and augmented reality grave markers showing individual burial locations.
